EAST WEST ALL-STAR GAME
The
East-West All-Star game was first established in 1957 and
ran for five years until 1961. The game featured the top
senior players in the state.

18, 1957 Elise Gymnasium - Robbins
The
East, featuring forward Catherine Bolton of Rich Square
and guard Frances Kirby of Carthage, turned in a high scoring
99 79 victory over the West here tonight before some
1,700 spectators who turned out to watch the first annual
girls All-Star classic.
Thirty
of North Carolinas outstanding distaff cagers from
every section of the state participated in the game, 15
on each squad. And emphasis was on offense throughout.
Bolton,
a 57 forward, poured in 28 pointsto feature
the Easts triumph, while Kirby was superb on defense.
In
pre-game ceremonies W.D. Carmichael Jr., presented plaques
to each of the players and coaches on behalf of Gov. Luther
Hodges.

The
West All-Stars, grabbing the lead early in the first period
and never trailing thereafter, captured an 81 -76 victory
over the East All-Stars
in the second annual East-West girls All-Star game here
tonight.
The
West, therefore, evened this two-year-old series at one
win each the East winning last year 99 79
at Robbins.
An
alternate, Mary Jackson of Mineral Springs who almost didnt
get into the game but finally made it when another girl
came down with
the mumps, oddly enough finished as the games high
scorer with 22 points.
Twila
Allen, the Robbins ace, was selected as the tournament queen.
Approximately
900 fans witnessed the contest.

After
trailing throughout most of the game, the East All-Stars
rallied in the final minute of action to defeat the West 89
to 85 here tonight
in the third annual girls all-star basketball game.
Nancy Oldham, a forward from Sanford, put the East ahead on
a shot from in front with 58 seconds to go
.. and the
West never caught
up again.
Reba Hefner of Taylorsville, who had 44 points for the night
tried a shot with 20 seconds to go and the West trailing 85
86 but it missed.
With three seconds to go, Nellie Bryan of Grantham sank a
free throw and Jenny Smithwick of Morehead City threw in a
field goal
to wrap up the verdict.
Bryan with 26 points and Oldham with 25 topped the Easts
efforts. Barbara Parks of Central Davidson scored 25 points
for the West.
A crowd of approximately 1,000 turned out for the game played
in the Carthage High School gym and sponsored by the North
Carolina Girls Athletic Association
J.T.
Odom of Elm City assisted by Mrs. Jean Hinnant of Bunn coached
the East. Pat Gainey of Taylorsville aided by Miss Irene Waldrop
of Concord coached the West.

West All-Stars, featuring Ann Johnson of Rankin, defeated
the East All-Stars 84 -73 here tonight in the fourth annual
North Carolina High School girls game.
Johnson,
a terrific scorer all season, poured in 22 points for the
West club to lead all pointmakers. And at the conclusion
of the play she
was selected as the outstanding player for the 1960 contest.
In
winning the West pulled up even with the East at two games
each in the series sponsored by the North Carolina High
School Girls Athletic
Association.

The
East All-Stars , in what developed into areal scoring battle,
toppled the West 131 -117 here tonight in the fifth annual
East-West All-Star
girls basketball game sponsored by the North Carolina Girls
Athletic association.
With defense almost forgotten from the opening whistle,
the east girls moved out front by the end of the first period
to hold a 22 18 margin.
And the winners spent most of the remaining time increasing
the final spread.
Peggy Craft of Jones Central poured in 28 points to feature
the triumph. But she received plenty of support from other
outstanding forwards.
Verna Gilliam of Winsor dropped in 25, Catherine Bordeau
of St. Paul 21, Betty Kirchdofer of Roseboro 19 and Andra
Cozart
of Bailey 18.
However, No. 1 scoring honors for the night went to Judy
Vaughn of Westfield who had 38 for the evening. Sis Craver
of Shelby and Judy
Stegall of Monroe each contributed 21. Asheboros Gail
Harris added 18 more for the Western club.
